  • Ramzi Boukhiam: African Express

One swell. Two mornings. A whole lot of waves.  A few months back, Moroccan surfer Ramzi Boukhiam eyed up the last winter swell of the season, packed his car full of boards, darted up the coast to one of his favorite spots, and indulged. As he puts it, “It was super fun and there were…

  • The Event That Changed Pro Surfing For Good

Here’s an old story:   In the 1970s, World Champion Rabbit Bartholomew walked into a bank to apply for a loan. He needed a quick $2K for a plane ticket to Hawaii. His plan was to get over there, compete in a few events, win himself some coin and pay the bank back. Easy.    Rab fills…

  • Kauli Vaast Wins Pro Junior At Biscarrosse

It was cold. The rain was pouring down. The wind whipped the ocean into a mess you’d want to pour laundry detergent into rather than paddle out in. Winning the Pro Junior at Biscarrosse wouldn’t be easy, but somebody had to do it. That somebody was Kauli Vaast. After placing second at the…

  • Gold Coast from A-Z

When we created Radical Times on the Gold Coast, our goal was to break the place down for you from A - Z. We believe we did just that with the video and boardrider’s guide. But if it left you wanting more, here’s another — more literal — version.      - The Alley.…

  • A Name To Remember: Rolando Montes

Everybody has this dream.    They’ll go to Hawaii. Pack some mutants at Pipe. Lay into a few hacks at Off The Wall. Impress everyone, have a dream season, end up starring in the sequel of North Shore. This rarely translates to reality.    But it did for Puerto Rico’s…

  • One California Winter With Micky Clarke

The first breeze of summer is blowing in California.    Out in the desert, neon freaks dance to the music under a starry sky. In the mountains, wildflowers explode out of saturated dirt. And in the sea, temps are rising and swells are sneaking in from someplace south of here. Winter is dead.…

  • How Plastic Bottles Turn Into Boardshorts

Ever enjoy a great surf in great waves on a great day and seen the not-so-great sight of plastic bottles strewn about the back-to-great beach? It creates a very deep, very specific breed of sadness. One that cuts you to the core.    But, to heal that wound, we have two pieces of good…

  • How The Superbank Works

Since the dawn of time, humans have had a eminent knack for improving on what nature has made readily available for us. Nature gave us New York, humans made it a city. Nature gave us sugarcane, humans fermented it into rum and then baked it into cookies when they were hungover in that…

It's like a chemistry lab in here. Or a Detroit automobile factory. But also kind of like an old surf dog’s garage. In other words, I’ve never seen anything like it.    Standing inside the Burford Blanks factory on the Gold Coast, there’s a lot to be taken in.…
