Samasource is a non-profit business with the mission to reduce global poverty by outsourcing digital work to unemployed people in the United States and impoverished countries. One of the first organizations to engage in impact sourcing, Samasource uses an internet-based model called "microwork" to break down large-scale digital projects from clients into smaller tasks for workers to complete. These workers are trained in basic computer skills and paid a local living wage (as determined by the Fair Wage Guide) for their labor. Samasource has been named one of Fast Company's "Most Innovative Companies" and counts Walmart, Google and eBay among its clients.

  • This summer we had the privilege of hosting a wonderful group of Samasource supporters at our recently expanded Delivery Center in Nairobi, Kenya. We currently employ 700+ people in digital work, making us the largest BPO employer in Nairobi (something we can’t help but brag about :)).A few of our workers opened their homes to us, and their stories are too incredible not to share. We visited Fidel...

  • We decided to scrap our traditional black tie gala last year. We were spending too much money to impress our community, who didn’t need an extravagant party to be impressed. The real thing that impresses our donors is the work they support. We threw our first “un-gala" -- no elaborate decorations, no expensive party favors. Our donors loved the idea of reinvesting our gala budget on our programs i...

  • How Teams in Nairobi Help Shape Your Shopping ExperienceAs a kid, I marveled at the strategy involved in retail layouts. From inviting department store entryways stocked with deals, to the tactical placement of milk & eggs in the backmost aisle of grocery stores, there’s always a reason why an item is placed where it is. It was a never-ending personal challenge to try and decode these invisible ma...

  • Before I joined Samasource, when I thought of corporate sustainability, I thought about green buildings and zero emissions footprints. Since joining my first nonprofit, I’ve been inspired to think about sustainability in a whole new way. For our nonprofit, Samasource, sustainability means making enough earned revenue to cover all the costs of our not-for-profit program. It’s a holy grail of sorts....

  • Samasource Delivery Center’s One Year AnniversarySamasource, a non-profit founded in 2008, has been focused on one guiding mission: to connect women and youth to dignified work through the internet economy. In this time, we’ve learned a lot about the complexities of giving work to people who’ve never been in formal employment. We’ve also learned how challenging it can be to make jobs for those un-...

  • I just wanted to share some great news — today I am honored that Sama was named one of Fast Company’s 50 Most Innovative Companies (#2 on the nonprofit list) for “redefining what it means to be a not-for-profit business.” We’re on a mission to reach sustainability (break-even on earned revenue before the end of 2017 — a huge milestone for a nonprofit). • I spent last week at the World Economic Forum in Davos raising funds for Sama and building Laxmi’s global community of retailers and partners. Along the way I came across some especially powerful ideas, and reinforced one of our own (the impact bond). Here are five key tech and social impact trends from this year’s Forum:1. It’s not enough to do less bad. We say this a lot in the office — new busi...

  • On July 24th, we held our first annual Sama World Cup in Nairobi, Kenya. The day was filled with entertainment, excellent (and not so excellent) soccer, and a whole lot of food. For the first time ever, we brought together teams from Nairobi, San Francisco and Gulu, Uganda (stay tuned for a blog post from the Gulu team's experience -- for many, it was their first time in Kenya!). Cavin Apodo, one ...

  • While visiting Samasource workers in Gulu, Uganda, our team met a young man who walks 3 hours to work -- one way. He is the only income earner supporting his father and 14 brothers and sisters. Many of our workers have similar commutes, so our team decided to buy bikes for all 25 of our workers in Gulu to make transportation easier. They sent us this amazing thank you video and we had to share:)

  • Here at Samaschool, we’ve been eagerly reading about Getting Smart’s Project-Based World campaign. The idea that schools should be preparing students for independent, project-based work is an equity issue deeply resonates with us. Our goal is to help low-income individuals secure and sustain work in the web-enabled gig economy, and we work to achieve this by training older youth and adults in the ...
