  • New: Dual diagnosis emerged as a diagnosis more than 20 years ago. What is dual diagnosis? Why is it so important for drug and alcohol addiction treatment? Dual diagnosis refers to an individual who suffers from both an addiction disorder and a mental illness. It is also known as co-occurring disorders. How common is dual diagnosis? SAMSHA reports substance use disorders are more common in individuals who struggle with mental health disorders.1 In fact, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reports that about a third of people who suffer from mental illness also deal with addiction issues.2 This is no small problem. The 2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) estimates that 9.2 million Americans suffer from co-occurring disorders.3 Thus, many individuals seeking treatment for substance also suffer from mental illness. Sadly, only a small percentage receive appropriate treatment. The NSDUH estimates only 7.7% of those with co-occurring conditions receive appropriate
  • Old: A primary aspect of addiction is that of isolation. Isolation is our inability to connect emotionally and spiritually. Our isolation stems from other and/or self-inflicted pain. As our addiction worsens, our isolation intensifies to the point of feeling completely alone in the world. We are trapped in a bubble of self, being completely absorbed in our pain. The paradox is that we are dying from isolation while surrounded by many pleading to help. Intimacy vs isolation The opposite of isolation is intimacy. Those who can achieve intimacy with others do not have to use substances to cope with everyday life. When feeling overwhelmed by life, a person with intimate relationships turns to friends/family/Higher Power for understanding, support, and solutions. Whereas, the addict turns to alcohol and drugs for temporary relief. A primary component of recovery is the movement from isolation to intimacy.   The movement from isolation to intimacy requires a few ingredients. The ingredients

  • New: Most of us can recall, on at least one occasion, where their restaurant server or bartender was intoxicated during their shift. As surprising as this is, it is even more shocking when other staff and even management  ignore the situation. Sadly, this scenario is common in the hospitality industry. Substance abuse in the restaurant and bar industry is rampant. In fact, it is quite normal for employees to engage in drug and alcohol use, while at work. Why are hospitality workers at a higher risk? Restaurant and bar workers have an experience set that makes them a unique population. This type of job requires being around drunk customers, serving alcohol. Hours can be long and often extend into the wee hours of the morning. Restaurant workers often spend time out together, visiting bars and nightclubs after work, drinking and using drugs together. It is easy for someone in this field to get caught up in the lifestyle where alcohol and …
  • Old: Extended Care is a relatively new concept in the addiction treatment field and is largely a result of the growing evidence that more is needed to obtain long-term success and avoid relapse.  It’s careful to note that some organizations refer to sober living or outpatient programs as extended care. Make sure you ask the right questions when researching addiction treatment options to be sure the program you are considering is a true extended care program. An extended care program bridges the gap between the highly controlled environment of inpatient drug treatment and the more liberal setting of a sober living program. Extended care treatment programs take place within a residential setting. What should a good Extended Care Program provide? A program curriculum. Unlike sober living programs, an extended care program should have a curriculum in place that includes programming throughout the day Clear objectives. There are clear objectives and goals for each client to achieve. 24/7 su
